Multi bit phase change memory from IBM

IBM Research - Zurich has announced  new type of inexpensive and reliable universal non-volatile memory, called phase change memory (PCM).Shattering records,it supposedly reads and writes 100 times faster than conventional flash - based memory with a latency of 10 microseconds, and is also several of order of magnitudes more reliable, with 10 million estimated write-cycles.
Surprisingly, the technology behind phase change memory is not expensive and can be commercially used for a variety of devices requiring storage and memory, from servers to tablets. It's not going to be hitting markets very soon, with IBM stating the technology would enable 'a paradigm shift for enterprise IT and storage systems including cloud computing by 2016'.
IBM's phase- change memory built using cells created from a special alloy , which can be electrically controlled into different physical states - crystalline with low resistance properties, amorphous with high resistance properties. Each alloy cell is capable of storing four data bits using different resistance levels, making it the first multi-bit phase change memory with reliable retention only single bit PCM was capable earlier.

UNIX : How to get record count from zipped file

Sometimes we may need to get records count from file . For that we can use wc -l , command with file name. In some situation the file will be in compressed format . wc -l will not directly work with zipped files . In this case we can do zcat the file and pipe the word count command with it. Example : Let say we have a file cricketData.dat.gz To get word count from the file use : zcat cricketData.dat.gz | wc -l This will give the record count.

Excel : How to pad zeros

Today I got a requirement to format the number in excel cell - to left pad number with zeros.i find the following function very useful to do it. In case one to make the number left padded with "0" s give the formula =TEXT(A1,"0000") In case two even more enhanced form to make it left padded with "0" and add two decimal places give the formula as =TEXT(A2,"0000.00")
